Back in the Day Bakery is a locally owned bakery in Savannah’s Starland District that has garnered national attention. Besides being featured in “Southern Living,” “Food & Wine Magazine,” and “The New York Times,” the Days are were nominated for a James Beard Award! Many would say Back in the Day can be credited with revitalizing the Starland District neighborhood since their opening in 2002. Today, the Starland District is thriving, especially in the culinary world.  Back in the Day Bakery keeps locals and visitors coming back time after time because of the quality and care that goes in to every homemade item on their shelves, despite the growing customer demand.

When you step into Back in the Day bakery, you are instantly hit with nostalgia. The space is filled with mismatched vintage tables, kitschy artwork, and vintage chandelier’s that give a nod to the past.

Back in the Day is a favorite of Seaport Real Estate, especially for breakfast. We recommend getting there early, because the line forms quickly once the bakery opens. A true Savannah landmark – by 10:00am on a Saturday the line will be out the door. The “Build Your Own Biscuit” is an extremely popular choice, with available additions to your scratch made buttermilk biscuit such as thick cut Apple Smoked Bacon and the BEST jam. Some of our other breakfast favorites include the banana bread, bourbon bread pudding (that’s okay for breakfast, right?), and the quiche of the day. The menu rotates daily, so you can always try something new.

Cheryl and Griffith Day, the owners of Back in the Day Bakery and New York Times bestselling authors, have written two cookbooks: The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook and Made With Love featuring made from scratch and vintage recipes their customers love. You can always catch a peek of them pulling hot loaves of bread out of the ovens or mixing cookie dough in the back. It is obvious that Cheryl and Griffith truly care about every item that goes into their bakery cases and their loyal customers.

Of course, you can always find incredible desserts in the bakery cases. The old fashioned cupcakes are extremely popular and go fast, topped with the most addictive frosting that is not too sweet, and legendary chocolate chip cookies with chocolate chips that somehow always stay soft. While there are a few staples in the bakery cases, many items are seasonal and not offered every day – so you always feel like you are bringing home something special.
